I believe that the upshot of the green box for 'Read Only' is that the folder itself (its name and attributes) are read-only, but its contents are not. That's my Mac home directory, which I can definitely write to as well as read from.
When you say that Windows shows the shared folder as read-only, are you talking about a Properties screen like this?
